Tony Overwater founded Jazz in Motion Records in 1990, while still a student at the conservatory — driven by a desire to document and share the music he and his friends were making. It was an act of belief in the music before the music had an audience.
Kepera Records came later, when Tony began releasing albums rooted in the musical traditions of the MENA region — music that deserved its own identity, distinct from a jazz label.
The name Kepera comes from ancient Egyptian mythology — the god of spontaneous creation, of things that come into being from their own force, often depicted as a beetle or scarab. For Tony, that idea resonates on two levels: the cross-cultural encounters that give rise to unexpected music, and improvisation itself — the art of creating something in the moment, from nothing but presence and listening.
Together, the two labels form a single commitment: to music of the highest artistic quality, wherever it comes from.
